Lopwell Dam Wildlife and Education Centre

SWLT manage a redundant pump house at Lopwell Dam with the intention to develop this as a Wildlife and Education Centre. This magnificent building, which was built in 1953, using locally sourced materials boasts a wealth of history. The pump house was used to pump water from the River Tavy and supply additional drinking water to the City of Plymouth. With the growth of the City, supply for drinking water increased and the pump house was made redundant in 1981.
The building has been used for various television productions in the past, mainly the 'VET' but has remained vacant ever since. It is our intention to develop the building as a Wildlife and Education Centre and are now in a position to offer this exciting facility to schools, colleges, universities and the public. The exterior of the pump house is structurally sound and has had in excess of £15,000 spent on renovation so far. Funds have been obtained for the development of the interior of the facility; however, we are still short of reaching our target.
Architectural designs have been produced which boast classroom/conference facilities, interpretation and information displays and 'high-tech' LCD displays that will feature live underwater fish migrations and wildlife around the site. The centre will host high quality teaching facilities and would be a first for the Southwest.
